Post-harvest fish loss assessment in small-scale fisheries: A guide for the extension officer

27 July 2011
Post-harvest fish losses are a major concern and occur in most fish distribution chains throughout the world. Aside from the lost income to fishers, processors and traders, a loss of fish means less fish available for the consumer ¿ contributing to food insecurity. FAO has recently published Post-harvest fish loss assessment in small-scale fisheries: A guide for the extension officer, a manual which describes fish loss assessment methods and provides guidance on when and how these can be used in the process of planning an intervention to reduce post-harvest losses or monitoring the effectiveness of a loss reduction intervention. It also aims to give policy-planners and decision-makers a better understanding of the issues facing fishing communities in relation to post-harvest fish loss.
