<fi:Overview>
 <fi:Text>

Capture fisheries and aquaculture depend on the use of natural renewable resources and other resources (e.g. aquatic species, land and water) as raw material. Other resources such as hatchery-produced seeds, feeds and fertilizers are artificially generated. Because fishery resources are finite, there is competition for them, within the sector and with other types of uses.

Capture fisheries resources have historically been considered, used and managed on a stock-by-stock basis. They are impacted by fisheries as well as other polluting and degrading economic activities. The state of wild marine resources raises concern as, since 1990, about a quarter are more or less seriously overfished. The state of wild inland resources is poorly known but is likely to deserve equal concern in most regions and reflect a much greater environmental impact.

Aquaculture resources comprise a wide variety of animals and plants (and their genetic resources) such as fish; crustaceans, molluscs, seaweeds and other aquatic plants. The most harvested species are oysters and carps. The use of local species is recommended but introduced species are responsible for 17% of the world's finfish production with significant social, environmental, genetic and economic impact. The culture of several important species still relies on the collection of brood stock or seed from natural populations. Aquafeed resources production is one of the fastest expanding agricultural industries in the world, with growth rates in excess of 30 percent per year.

<dc:Description>
<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">Marine fisheries are very important to the economy and well-being of coastal communities.
Maintaining the long-term prosperity and sustainability of marine fisheries is not only
of political and social significance but also of economic and ecological importance. This
review presents an updated assessment of the current status of the world¿s marine fishery
resources. Its aim is to provide the FAO Committee on Fisheries, policy-makers, civil
society, fishers and managers of world fishery resources with a comprehensive, objective
and global review of the state of the living marine resources of the oceans. The review
was based mainly on official catch statistics up until 2009 and relevant stock assessment
and other complementary information available until 2010.
This review consists of four major components. The first is a global overview of
marine fishery production and the state of marine fish resources. The second part is
divided into chapters that summarize and compile the information available for each
FAO major fishing area, together with a discussion of the major trends and changes
that have occurred with the main fishery resources exploited in each area and comments
on the stock assessment work undertaken in support of fisheries management in each
region. The third section is allocated to special topics that attract great attention in
the international community, including tuna and tuna-like species, sharks, the Pacific
islands region, deep-sea fisheries, and fisheries and long-term climate variability. The
final part lists all the tables that provide details about historical and recent catches for
the major marine resources and, where possible, assessments of the most current state of
exploitation of fish stocks.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:Title xml:lang="en">Review of the State of the World Fishery Resources: Inland Fisheries</dc:Title>

<dc:Description>
<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">The fishery statistics reported to FAO by countries and maintained in the FishStat database are
analysed for trends in quantity and composition of catches from 1950 to 2009. Catches have been
increasing at a steady rate throughout the period. Fish from inland water capture fisheries are an
important source of animal protein, especially in landlocked countries and for populations riparian to
lakes and rivers. Finfish contribute about 90 percent of the catch together with some crustaceans and
molluscs. The accuracy of reporting of catches by taxonomic group has improved with time and more
groups are being reported in 2009 than in 1950. At the same time, the percentage of catches assigned
to the generic ¿freshwater fishes NEI¿ category has declined. Trends in catches and taxonomic groups
are analysed for subcontinental regions under a more general continental heading. The regions are
divided mainly by geography, although in some cases economic and political considerations are used.
Catches in the various regions of Africa, Asia and South and Central America have risen steadily over
the period of the review, although there are local exceptions to the general trend. There is clear
evidence that such increases are real in some individual fisheries, but generally the increases are
attributed to improvements in reporting, whereby catches that were already there but previously
ignored are now being incorporated into the reports. Catches in North America, and most of Europe,
have declined in the same period, which is attributed to shifts in economic conditions that make
fishing not longer financially viable, and a greater public demand for recreational fishing. Catches
from eastern Europe and the Russian Federation declined from a maximum in the 1980s, but have
shown some signs of recovery in the last decade. In general, the world¿s inland fisheries still appear
viable although environmental pressures, such as damming, water abstraction and overexploitation,
pose a potential threat to the maintenance of present levels of reproduction and recruitment, and
hence, ultimately catch.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:Title xml:lang="en">Report of the Workshop to develop a FAO strategy for assessing the state of inland capture fishery resources</dc:Title>

<dc:Description>
<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">A Workshop was convened to develop a strategy to improve the state of information on the status of inland fisheries. Inland fisheries are a vital component in the livelihoods of people in many parts of the developed and developing world. Globally, lakes, reservoirs and wetlands cover a total area of about 7.8 million km2 and provide a rich environment for inland fisheries. The Twenty-eighth Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries observed that, ¿data and statistics on small-scale fisheries, especially in inland waters, were not always comprehensive, resulting in underestimating their economic, social and nutritional benefits and contribution to livelihoods and food security. The underestimation of the importance of inland fisheries can lead to policies and practices that further degrade resources and endanger food security¿. The marine capture fishery sector has, since 1974, reported on the state of major marine fish stocks. The percentage of marine fish stocks that are depleted, recovering, underexploited, moderately exploited, fully exploited and overexploited, along with their trends is extremely useful and widely cited in fishery, conservation and development literature. There is no equivalent information set for inland fisheries on which to make assessments. The Workshop identified several important differences between inland and marine capture fisheries that necessitate different approaches to the assessment of inland fisheries. A main difference is that the state of exploitation is usually the main driver determining the status in marine fisheries and is the principal indicator of management performance used by FAO for global assessment. The status of inland fisheries is also determined by rates of exploitation, but other influences that affect habitat quality and quantity can also be significant and often more important. Taking into account the special characteristics of inland fisheries, the Workshop identified ecosystem services provided by inland fisheries and some potential indicators and information that could be used for the assessment of inland capture fisheries. Indicators were identified for social and economic aspects of a fishery and for environmental and production aspects. Both aspects were judged important in the assessment of inland fisheries, and efforts were made to establish a composite indicator. The elements of a strategy to assess inland fisheries were not completely defined by the Workshop and further work was planned to determine the usefulness of the indicators and composite indicator. </dcterms:abstract>
